At Go Turf, we want your turf buying experience to be as simple and straightforward as possible. We’re big believers in getting it right the first time, so we want to supply you with the info you need to make your project a success. Whether you’re a contractor installing turf for your client or a DIYer ready to tackle your yard, we want to help you succeed.

With that in mind, there are two BIG things you need to know about buying turf (and a few things to keep in mind.)

1. Turf is Sold in 15 ft Wide Rolls

All of our turfs are manufactured and sold in 15 ft wide rolls. As a result, we sell turf by the linear foot, meaning it is sold 15 sqft. per linear foot (15 ft wide, 1 ft long.) Each roll has 100 linear feet per roll for a total of 1,500 sqft.

When designing your layout, keep the 15 ft width in mind. If your yard is slightly wider than 15ft, consider using rock or mulch to bring the width down to just under 15 ft as this will save you a significant amount of money.

2. Turf Has a Directional Grain

Like wood, turf has a grain that needs to be consistent across the entire install. Turf fibers come laying down on the matting in which they’re installed. Part of the installation process including using sand and other infills to “stand” these fibers back up, reducing the shine and improving the look and feel of the turf. However, even when standing up, the turf has a “direction” or grain. This means that any turf installed at an angle to the primary portion of the yard will appear different, usually more shiny or dull.

When designing your landscaping, it’s important to take this grain into consideration, especially if you plan to use excess pieces adjacent to the primary piece of turf. If your design necessitates the use of a small piece and you don’t want to purchase another 15 ft wide section, we encourage the use of a design element like a path or flower garden to separate the two pieces. This will help to minimize the visual difference in the grain.
